Reba McEntire Uses Her Block On Contestant Who Doesn’t Join Her Team

Going into the final week of Blind Auditions on NBC’s The Voice, Coach Reba McEntire was the only coach left with a block in her arsenal. By using a block, the coach gets to prevent one of the other coaches from having the contestant join their team. The coaches must use these strategically, as they each only get one per season.

Previously, John Legend blocked Niall Horan from contestant Stee, Gwen Stefani blocked Reba McEntire from contestant Jason Arcilla, and Niall Horan blocked John Legend from contestant Rudi.

All Four Chairs Turned For Contestant Brandon Montel

For his Blind Audition, Brandon Montel delivered a beautiful rendition of H.E.R.’s “Hard Place.” Coach Reba McEntire is the first coach to turn her chair and in doing so chooses to block coach John Legend.

The remaining three judges turn their chairs shortly after and when John sees the word “blocked” illuminated in bright red lights, he shakes his head in defeat. Reba gets out of her chair and attempts to console him at the end of the audition but he dismisses her and says, “I can’t look. Get away from me.”

Who Does Brandon Montel Choose As His Coach?

The 29-year-old Memphis native ultimately gets to choose which team he will join, but not before each coach has the opportunity to earn his favor.

John gets to say his piece first:

“Brandon, we have been unceremoniously prevented from working together by the queen over here. Most of the time she is a benevolent queen, but every once in a while she’ll do some ruthless, cold-blooded, dirty things. If Reba messes up and there’s a steal opportunity, I will be first in line.”

Niall followed with a complimentary review of the performance:

“Your runs were tasteful, your tone is so good, something that actually, we haven’t heard. I definitely don’t have a team member like you, so I would absolutely love to work with you. I’ve been waiting for you, man.”

Reba eagerly explained why she used her block:

“I’ve been holding my block, waiting on this opportunity, because you are so special. I don’t have anybody like you. Your pitch, everything about your soulfulness, I knew you were a performer. So then when I turned around and I saw you I thought, man am I so glad I blocked John. I would love to have you on my team. I’ve got lots of years experience and I can bring it on to you.”

Finally, Gwen got to throw her hat in the ring:

“I thought your performance was gorgeous, beautiful, and very original sounding. I would love to be your coach. I feel like I’m trying to fight right now. I’ve been in a band. I’ve been a solo artist. I’ve bounced around in so many different genres of music, and out of everything that I’ve done in my career, being on this show has brought me so much joy… I love being here and I love coaching people!”

After a brief deliberation, Montel chooses… TEAM GWEN! Meaning, that despite her best efforts, Reba’s block was wasted
