On Tuesday (Aug. 25), A Statement Released By Dolly’s Family Confirmed That The Singer Died At Age 80
A video message was shared on the country superstar’s social media. Her nephew Bryan Seaver spoke on behalf of the rest of her family.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Seaver said. “As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment, but haven’t truly felt it until now. It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness.”

Throughout her extraordinary life, Dolly reached heights that not many artists ever have. She wrote more than 3,000 songs, earned 25 No.1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, and won 11 Grammy Awards.
The success of Dolly’s 60-year career is undeniable. Even if you don’t listen to country music, you definitely still know how big of a star she is. But what many people may not know is that one of her biggest accomplishments doesn’t come in the form of a song.
It was the love she shared with her husband, Carl Dean. Dolly may have been loved by millions, but nobody loved her quite like he did.
Carl Dean passed away in March 2025. Now that he and Dolly are together once again, let’s take a look back at their incredible love story and the journey that led to 59 years of marriage.
Dolly Parton & Carl Dean’s Love Story
Dolly and Carl met by chance in 1964 at the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville. It just so happened to be Dolly’s very first day in the city.
“I was in such a hurry to get here — and after I’d put my clothes in the machine, I started walkin’ down the street, just lookin’ at my new home, and this guy hollered at me, and I waved,” Dolly told The New York Times. “Bein’ from the country, I spoke to everybody. And he came over and, well, it was Carl, my husband.”
The two began dating, and not long after, Dolly’s country music career started to take off. Carl was by her side through it all, but he preferred to stay out of the public eye.
He reportedly attended one event with Dolly in the early days and disliked it so much that he said he’d never do it again. Dolly respected his wishes, and Carl remained out of the spotlight. So much so, there are only a few photos of him that have ever surfaced.
On May 30, 1966, Dolly and Carl got married. They got hitched at the Ringgold Baptist Church in Ringgold, Georgia. The only attendees were the pastor, his wife, and Dolly’s mom.
On May 30, 2016, Dolly and Carl Dean renewed their vows. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Dolly recalled the ceremony, saying:
“I got all dressed up in the most beautiful gown you’ve ever seen and dressed that husband of mine up. He looked like a handsome dude out of Hollywood. We had a few family and friends around. We didn’t plan anything big at all because we didn’t want any kind of strain, any kind of tension, any kind of commotion, so we planned it cleverly and carefully. We just had a simple little ceremony at our chapel at our place. We just had just a few people who needed to be there to make sure they got the pictures and the few things that we needed. We just had fun with it.”
Although Carl was quite the mystery man, Dolly still loved to talk about him whenever she had the chance. She even wrote several songs inspired by their relationship.
Probably the most famous is her hit song “Jolene,” which was based on a true story of a bank teller having a crush on Carl when they had first gotten married.
Other songs she wrote for her husband include “Say Forever You’ll Be Mine” (1975), “Marry Me” (2001), and “Forever Love” (2016).
The last song that Dolly wrote for Carl was “If You Hadn’t Been There.” She released the song shortly after his passing.
