When Bindi Irwin turned 21 on July 24, 2019, her longtime love Chandler Powell surprised her with a birthday gift she’ll always treasure…an engagement ring!

It was obvious that Bindi and Chandler were itching to get married, and they began wedding planning right away. They set the date, picked the venue (Australia Zoo), and Bindi bought her dress.

Bindi also shared her plans to have her younger brother, Robert, walk her down the aisle as a way of honoring their father, Steve. The famed TV personality and conservationist passed away in 2006 when Bindi was only eight years old.

But sadly, Bindi and Chandler had to change their wedding plans at the last minute due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the pandemic began its initial outbreak, it was recommended that people enter self-isolation in order to slow the spread of the virus. As a result, large events and gatherings were discouraged or outright banned.

Bindi and Chandler opted to move forward and marry anyway, although they chose not to have any guests out of consideration for everyone’s safety.

The couple married on March 25, 2020 during a “small ceremony” in Australia Zoo. They announced the news on social media, with Bindi writing:

“There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now.”

Chandler also spoke about the special day:

“Today, March 25, 2020, marks the most amazing day of my life. I married my best friend.”

Although they weren’t able to invite guests, Bindi and Chandler weren’t alone at their wedding. Since Bindi’s mom, Terri, and Robert live at Australia Zoo with her and Chandler, they were both able to attend the ceremony. That means Robert was still able to walk Bindi down the aisle as planned.

Robert took to his own Instagram to reflect on Bindi’s wedding. It’s clear he is thrilled for his sister and new brother-in-law as they embark on this next chapter of their lives.

Calling Bindi’s wedding day “a day that we will never forget,” Robert wrote:

…I was beyond honoured to get to walk Bindi down the aisle today. Even though all of your wedding plans had to change at the last minute to keep everyone safe and healthy, it truly was an emotional and beautifully spontaneous day… I know that Dad was with us, and we are all so delighted for your future as husband and wife. I love you both.”
