Sam Neill, Of ‘Jurassic Park’ Fame, Dies At 78

Sam Neill, who was known for roles in Hollywood blockbusters and independent films, died on Monday, July 13, at the age of 78.
Most known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 adaptation of Jurassic Park, the New Zealander leaves behind an impressive body of work.

In a statement released by his family, Neill’s death was “sudden and unexpected,” coming several years after the actor beat cancer.
Sam Neill’s Family Releases Statement On His Death, And His Cause Of Death Is Revealed
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia,” Neill’s family wrote in a statement released on the actor’s social media.
“Whānau,” which translates broadly to family, is a term used by the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, known as the Māori.
Noting that his death was “sudden and unexpected,” the statement notes, “Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
In 2022, Neill was diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, according to USA Today, which he beat earlier this year in April. His family said they were “blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
Describing his death as an “immeasurable loss,” Neill’s family said that more details would be shared in the future.

On July 16, Neill’s agent, Philip Grenz, told the BBC that Neill’s cause of death was pneumonia.
As quoted by Variety, Grenz said, “As Sam Neill’s longtime rep, I spoke with his family and wish to clarify some details for his fans. Sam passed away from pneumonia. Prior to becoming sick, Sam had valiantly fought and beaten lymphoma through a new treatment called CAR-T therapy.”
Grenz noted that Neill acted in four films back-to-back before his death, and those films are expected to be released in the coming months.
Sam Neill’s Legacy In Front Of The Camera
Beyond Jurassic Park and several of its sequels, Neill had numerous roles in films that earned him acclaim over the years.
His breakout film role was in Gillian Armstrong’s My Brilliant Career (1979), a staple of Australian cinema.
From there, he went on to star in the controversial body horror film Possession (1981), which has gained a significant cult following over the past four decades.
He also starred alongside Sean Connery as one of the Soviet defectors in The Hunt For Red October (1989).
The same year that Jurassic Park was released, Neill starred in the highly celebrated New Zealander film The Piano (1993), which was directed by Jane Campion. The film earned the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay.
Notable other roles include starring in Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer (1998), the title role in the acclaimed 1998 miniseries Merlin, a reoccurring part in the series Peaky Blinders, and New Zealander film Hunt For The Wilderpeople (2016).
