Siblings’ Influence Prevents Death Penalty In Nick Reiner Case

After a grand jury indictment against Nick Reiner was unsealed on Aug. 12, it was still unclear if the son accused of murdering both of his parents would face the death penalty.
Nick, who has been in custody since Dec. 14, 2025, as the primary suspect in the killing of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, pleaded “not guilty” to the charges leveled against him in the indictment.
Those charges include two counts of murder, which were categorized in the indictment with a caveat of “murder by means of lying in wait.”
If the prosecution goes on to effectively make its case regarding the caveat of “murder by means of lying in wait,” which would implicate Nick as having committed the murders in a premeditated manner, the LA County District Attorney’s Office noted that there were two options for him if he were convicted: the death penalty, or life in prison.
At a pretrial hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 15, the nature of the potential punishment of accused Nick Reiner was revealed.
Speaking before the court, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, “After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the District Attorney’s Office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case.”
Hochman then explained, “That means that the maximum sentence that [Nick] will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole.”
Weighing on the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s decision to not pursue the death penalty against Nick were the views reportedly expressed by Nick’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, according to ABC News, whom Hochman described as being “very clear” regarding their brother.
The date for when the Nick Reiner trial will begin has not yet been set, with Hochman being quoted in court today by ABC News as saying that it is not expected to begin in 2026, adding, “When the defense is ready to proceed, the government will be ready to proceed.”
Notably, the pretrial hearing was held one day after Nick turned 33 on Monday, Sept. 14.
