America’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell was testing out an electric bike in the courtyard of his Malibu home Saturday (August 8) when he “fell off.” The fall resulted in a broken back for which Cowell is being treated.

60-year-old Cowell underwent a 5-hour surgery overnight, according to a statement from his rep to PEOPLE.

“Simon had surgery overnight and is doing okay this morning. It was a five-hour surgery and he has had to have a number of fusions and metal rod put into his back,” the source told PEOPLE. “He landed on his back when he fell from the bike. The injuries are bad but he’s also been told he was lucky.”

Simon, his girlfriend Lauren Silverman, their 6-year-old son Eric, and Silverman’s 14-year-old son Adam have been staying close to their Malibu home amid the coronavirus pandemic. Cowell was schedule to begin filming the first live shows for America’s Got Talent‘s 15th season on Tuesday.

Simon Cowell also suffered a fall in 2017 when he fainted and tumbled down the stairs of his London home. Cowell told media at the time that the fall was a reminder that we’re not invincible and called the fall “a huge shock.”

“They think I fainted because I had low blood pressure and so I have got to really take good care of myself to sort that out,” Simon said. “After all I am a dad and have more responsibility than ever.”

We wish Simon Cowell a full and speedy recovery.
