Social Security Administration To Announce Important Change In 2027 Benefits
Social Security recipients will find out this week how much their monthly benefits will increase in 2027.
The Social Security Administration will announce next year’s cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 8:30 a.m. ET. Social Security is a federal program that provides monthly payments to millions of eligible Americans, including retirees, people with qualifying disabilities and certain family members of deceased workers.
The program is funded primarily through payroll taxes paid by workers and employers. Each year, the administration adjusts retirement and other eligible benefits to account for inflation through the cost-of-living adjustment.
The increase is intended to help recipients keep up with rising prices for everyday expenses.

What Does This Mean For Recipients?
The administration calculates its annual COLA using inflation data from July, August and September. The adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W, according to their website.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the data each month, and September’s figures will provide the final information needed to calculate the 2027 COLA.
Recent estimates suggest the 2027 adjustment could be between 3.5% and 3.6%, although the final percentage will not be confirmed until the agency makes its official announcement.
For example, a person receiving $2,000 per month would see their payment increase to $2,070, if the adjustment is 3.5%. That would amount to an additional $70 per month, or $840 over a full year.
In 2026, the Social Security Administration approved a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment, giving beneficiaries a larger increase than the 2.5% adjustment they received in 2025.
The announcement will be published on the Social Security Administration’s official website. You can check the agency’s COLA page for the 2027 update.
