"Unclaimed Veteran" Honored By Local Community (Facebook/Gallatin Police Department)

A United States Navy veteran who passed away without any known family was honored by members of the community who gathered to ensure he was not laid to rest alone Tuesday (March 10).

Lonnie Dee Wayman, a veteran born April 8, 1952, died on February 21, 2026. Authorities were unable to locate relatives to claim his remains, classifying him as an “unclaimed veteran.”

“A Nashville native, Lonnie was born on April 8, 1952, and passed away on February 21, 2026. Sadly, Lonnie had no family to claim him, but today he was not alone,” the Gallatin Police Department (GPD) said. “Members of our community came together to ensure he was honored with the dignity and respect he deserved.”

Unclaimed veterans are typically identified after their death when authorities are unable to locate relatives or legal representatives. If no one comes forward, state or federal veterans’ offices arrange for the burial, often in a national or state veterans cemetery.

Full military honors are provided whenever possible, including a flag presentation, honor guard, and ceremonial rites.

Community Rallies Around Unclaimed Veteran

A funeral service was held at the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Nashville, where Wayman received full military honors. Law enforcement officers, fellow veterans, and local residents of the community attended the ceremony to recognize his service to the country.

Organizers said the turnout showed the community’s commitment to honoring those who served. More than 150 people reportedly attended the service, many of whom had never met Wayman but wanted to ensure he was remembered with dignity and respect.

“We are proud to stand in respect for a man who served his country. No veteran should ever be forgotten, and today we made sure Lonnie’s service and sacrifice were remembered,” GPD said.
