Tennessee Coach Hospitalized For Medical Issue
University of Tennessee assistant football coach William Inge, 52, has been hospitalized, the school announced Thursday (September 24).
The school shared that Inge is dealing with a personal medical issue and asked fans to respect his privacy while offering their prayers and support.
“Tennessee linebackers coach William Inge has been in the hospital dealing with a personal medical issue,” they said. “Coach Inge and his family appreciate your prayers and support, and we ask that you respect their privacy at this time.”
Inge addressed fans Friday in a message shared by the Vols on social media, thanking them for their prayers and support without revealing any further details about his illness. The hospitalization came just days before Tennessee’s matchup against Texas on Saturday.

Inge has more than 25 years of coaching experience at both the college and NFL levels. He joined Tennessee in 2024 as the Vols’ linebackers coach after spending two seasons at Washington, where he served as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Before Washington, Inge spent two seasons at Fresno State as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He also spent seven seasons at Indiana and previously held coaching positions at Buffalo, Cincinnati, San Diego State, Colorado and Northern Iowa.
Inge’s coaching career also includes a stint in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills in 2012, when he worked as an assistant defensive line coach. Inge was also a three-year starter at Iowa from 1993 to 1996 and was named an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection as a senior.
