The Madison centers on Pfeiffer’s character, Stacy Clyburn, who leaves New York City to visit Montana following a family tragedy. Her husband, Preston (played by Russell), and brother-in-law, Paul (played by Fox), were killed in a plane crash while on a fishing trip in the Madison River.
By moving herself and her daughters to Montana, Stacy hopes to feel closer to Preston as she develops a deeper understanding of the land that he loved.
Season 1 ends with Stacy making the decision to move to Montana full-time. We’ll see if her family members will eventually make the same choice in Season 2.
Key Character In The Madison Will Not Appear In Season 2
In an unprecedented move, The Madison was picked up for a second season before Season 1 ever started. The episodes have already been filmed, although the start date for Season 2 remains unknown.
However, one of the show’s key characters will not appear in the second season.
Matthew Fox, who played Stacy’s brother-in-law Paul Clyburn, is not returning for Season 2. In fact, Fox told The Hollywood Reporter that he filmed all of his Season 1 scenes while Season 2 was in production.

Fox, who’s semi-retired from acting, liked that The Madison was “a limited engagement” for him. He previously starred on Lost for six years, and now prefers projects that don’t require nearly as much of his time.
That played into his decision to leave The Madison after Season 1. As he told The Hollywood Reporter:
“That’s one of my requirements these days…I’m at a point in my life where I’d rather pop in and do something interesting, but I don’t want to dedicate six years of my life to something [again].”
Fox said he was instantly drawn to the scripts for The Madison. He praised show creator Taylor Sheridan, saying:
“[He] is an exceptional writer. When I read the scripts, it really hit me where it hurts, and also made me laugh.
Fox added, “He offers a lot as a storyteller, not just on a dialogue level but there’s so much subtext. I don’t know how he does everything that he’s doing. It’s mind-boggling. I’ve worked on other series where there’s a creator and a writers’ room where a lot of people are involved, and he writes everything. It’s really kind of astounding.”
Although Fox is leaving, Russell will return. Despite his character’s death, Russell will continue to appear in flashback scenes sprinkled throughout Season 2.
In the same Hollywood Reporter piece, Pfeiffer said that fans “might see” more of her and Russell together in Season 2. He chimed in, saying, “It’s in a different way.“
