What Is The Story Behind “Drink You Down?”

During a conversation with Country Rebel, Holmes spoke about the backstory and writing process of the song.

“My father was an addict his whole life, and eventually he didn’t make it…”

Holmes expressed that he found significant inspiration from this particular experience, which became a transformative moment that deeply influenced his musical path.

But then he invented a story in his mind. Holmes wondered how it would feel to get over somebody you loved while using voices “that aren’t good for us” to cope with the pain.

“You see a lot of people go down these spirals and they just drink themselves away, while they’re trying to drink the person away.”

“Drink You Down” kicks off with a softer, acoustic vibe that gradually evolves into a more intense rock sound, accentuating the emotional depth and intensity of Holmes’s lyrics, particularly as he reaches the impactful chorus.

“Drink You Down” chorus lyrics:

“I drink you down to ease my broken heart /

I’m lonesome bound ‘cause you tore it all apart /

This whiskey clears my memory, only for the night /

I drink you down, drink you down.”
