On Wednesday (March 11) actor Tom Hanks took to Instagram to announce that he and his wife, actress/singer Rita Wilson, tested positive for COVID-19, otherwise known as coronavirus.

Tom, who was cast as “Colonel” Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic, traveled to Australia with his wife to begin work on the film. The couple was diagnosed with coronavirus after arriving in Australia.

In a post on Instagram, Tom revealed his and Rita’s diagnoses and said they are now in isolation in Australia to avoid spreading the virus:

The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed,” Tom wrote. “We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach.”

As two of the most famous figures to be diagnosed with coronavirus, fans were understandably concerned about Tom and Rita, and reached out to learn more about their well-being.

Tom’s two eldest children (who he shares with ex-wife Samantha Lewes) took to social media to let fans know how he and Rita are doing. Son Colin wrote, “My parents are receiving excellent care in Australia and are doing well (and in good spirits) given the circumstances.”

Tom’s daughter, Elizabeth Ann, echoed her brother’s comments, saying her dad and Rita are in good spirits and are receiving great care.

I so appreciate everyone taking the time to reach out. Please take care of yourself and your loved ones,”she wrote.

Tom and Rita have two sons of their own, and their eldest, Chet, was the first of their kids to address their diagnosis on social media. He posted a video message in which he thanked people for all of the well-wishes they were sending to his parents.

Chet also let everyone know that his parents are “not even that sick,” and aren’t concerned about their diagnosis:

I just got off the phone with them and they both are fine. They’re not even that sick, they’re not worried about it, they’re not tripping, but they’re going through the necessary health precautions, obviously. But I don’t think it’s anything to be too worried about,” Chet said.

Now, for the first time since announcing their diagnosis, we finally have an update from Tom and Rita themselves.

Tom took to Instagram to share a short update about his and Rita’s conditions. He also posted a photo, which is the first we’ve seen of the couple since they announced their diagnosis.

Both Tom and Rita can be seen smiling at the camera. In his caption, Tom thanked everyone taking care of them in Australia, and wrote, “We are taking it one-day-at-a-time. There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no?”

We’ll continue to pray for Tom and Rita’s health, and hope their recovery is smooth.

Remember, it’s important to practice good hand-washing techniques, and be sure to keep all surfaces and workplaces sanitary. In addition, limit exposure to large groups and be sure to stay home if you feel sick.
