Newly Elected Texas Congressman Suddenly Passes Away After Attending Trump’s Speech
On Wednesday, March 5, it was confirmed that Sylvester Turner, the former mayor of Houston and recently elected Texas representative, passed away at the age of 70.
He had joined Congress just two months prior.
The news was confirmed by current Houston Mayor John Whitmire during a City Council meeting earlier this morning.
Reports confirm that the Democratic House member was taken to a Washington D.C. hospital on Tuesday night, shortly after attending President Donald Trump’s address to Congress. He was later pronounced dead.

As of now, the cause of Turner’s unexpected death has not been revealed.

Sylvester Turner was elected to represent Texas’ 18th congressional district just two months ago, but his political career spanned decades.
He served as Houston’s mayor for eight years and spent 27 years in the Texas House of Representatives.
In 2022, Turner revealed that he had privately battled bone cancer and was undergoing radiation treatment. By the end of the year, he was declared cancer-free. It is unclear if his past health issues played a role in his passing.
