The cemetery caretaker, Jerome Turner got a call shortly after it happened and quickly went over to the property to check out the damage. Many of the flags that lined each grave had massive burns holes in them and the mast that held the flags up were broken in half.
“I was just shocked to see all the flags broken up and all the flags burned,” Jerome said.
Homeless Or Teenagers May Have Done It
It’s been reported that the gravesite has had homeless loitering around at night as well as teenagers vandalizing the property before in the past. No one is sure who is responsible for this but the cemetery is asking for donations to help pay for installing cameras.
It wasn’t but 15 years ago someone dug up the graves and vandalized the tombstones and those who did it were never caught. Many of the graves are reported to be of African American veterans too.
“Leave the veterans alone at least because we are the ones saving, fighting for the country, so why would you come and vandalize the veterans?” said Jerome.
