The Buckeyes Visited The White House As Champions

An invite to the White House is a serious matter, but it’s not immune from laughter.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes learned that firsthand, with a little help from a fellow Ohioan, Vice President JD Vance.

His attempt to pose with the team’s College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy was temporarily thwarted as the trophy separated into two parts and fell to the ground.

Trump Celebrates Ohio State’s Victory

Gathering on the South Lawn of the White House on Monday, April 14, the college football team was invited in recognition of its victory over the University of Notre Dame on January 20.

Ohio State’s victory was its ninth win in a College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Coincidentally, January 20 was also the day that President Donald Trump was sworn in for his second presidential term.

“It turns out January 20 was a big day for all of us,” Trump said. “That was a big day. I love that day. I’ll never forget that day.”

Reading the team’s accomplishments, Trump went on to say, “You’re the national champions, and you’re standing right here at the White House! It’s a proud day for all of us, but it’s a proud day for the Scarlet and Gray.”

Vance’s Fumble

Trump then asked Vance to say a few words.

Stepping up to the podium, Vance said, “I am so proud to be part of Team Scarlet and Gray, today. Congratulations to the Ohio State Buckeyes on a hell of a 2024 season.”

As he concluded his statement, the team gathered for a group photo with Trump and Vance, with the team holding up a special No. 47 jersey with Trump’s name on the back.

Motioning to the trophy, footage from the ceremony shows Vance approaching the trophy and attempting to pick it up from the base.

The audience can be heard gasping as the base of the trophy detached from the trophy and fell to the ground.

Later that day, Vance posted on X, formerly Twitter, joking, “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”

Regardless, Vance still got a picture with the team.
