‘Voice’ Singers’ Battle Over Country-Rock Hit Ends With Unexpected Twist
on Oct 17, 2018
The Voice battle rounds leave the coaches to make some pretty challenging decisions. At the end of it all, no matter how much they love their teammates, they can only choose one winner.
Thankfully, there is a way for both singers to remain on the show…through a steal from another coach. But that chance is rare, since each coach can only use one steal during the battle rounds.
Oftentimes, you can see a steal coming from a mile away, as a coach makes it clear they’re a huge fan of the artist they end up stealing. But other times, the last thing you expect to hear is Carson Daly shouting “We’ve got a steal!”
One Team Adam battle illustrated that latter scenario, as no one anticipated a steal from a certain coach.
15-year-old Anthony Arya and Ben Affleck look-alike Steve Memmolo were paired together in the battles to sing the country-rock hit, “Amie.” Released in 1973, the song put the group Pure Prairie League on the map as their debut single.
Eventually, “Amie” reached the 20th spot on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The song was also a crossover success, as it managed to climb as high as the 27th spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Arya and Memmolo’s take on the tune was simply delightful. Their voices meshed together in a perfect way, while still giving each one of them the chance to shine as individuals.
The Voice‘s official Twitter perhaps described the battle best by saying that it was “SO STUNNING.”

Needless to say, their coach Adam Levine was left with a tough choice to make once everything wrapped up. Though it isn’t too hard to tell from the way he talked which singer he was going to name as the winner.
It’s likely you could have predicted Levine’s choice to keep the more seasoned Memmolo, and sadly send Arya home.
But we bet you never expected what happened as Levine went up to hug Arya before he left. In an unexpected twist, Jennifer Hudson slammed down her red button to steal Arya for herself.

When asked to give Levine some advice on who to choose, Hudson did note that Arya had a lot of potential. Once he was available to steal, she made it even more clear how much potential she sees in him!
Now it’s time to see if you agree with Hudson as well. Tune in to the video below to check out the country-rock battle that sparked one of the biggest steals of the season.
