Luke Combs is best known as the country artist topping the charts and winning awards for his music – but he’s also getting notoriety for teaching fans the best way to shotgun a beer.

Combs says that the first key to shotgunning a beer without making a mess is to know where the air bubble in the can is located. Knowing this can allow you to make a hole in the can in a way that won’t cause the beer to spray everywhere.

Most dentists probably wouldn’t recommend going with Combs’ way of opening the bottom hole in the beer can – He digs right in with a tooth so he can get to work.
After you’ve made a crease or small hole with a tooth (or sharp object of your choosing), Combs recommends expanding the surface area of the hole from which you’ll drink the beer. You can do this by peeling back pieces of the aluminum can, a little bit at a time.
“The bigger the hole, the faster you can drink it,” Combs says.
The key to getting a clean shotgun, according to Combs, is to not completely open the can until it’s upright. He recommends placing your mouth on the can and then turning your head, allowing the beer can to go completely vertical.
Once the can is popped – happy shotgunning!
