South African World Cup Athlete Dies At 25
South Africa is mourning the loss of soccer player Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25.
The South African Football Players Union confirmed Adams’ death on Saturday, just weeks after he helped Bafana Bafana reach the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup. Adams also starred for Mamelodi Sundowns, where he had established himself as one of the country’s brightest young talents.
“Death has cruelly stolen one of our own,” the union said. “It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer, but it will never take away the legacy Jayden Adams leaves behind.”

Adams started two of South Africa’s three group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and came off the bench during the team’s historic 1-0 victory over South Korea on June 24, a win that secured Bafana Bafana’s first-ever trip to the tournament’s knockout stage.
According to ESPN, Western Cape South African Police Service spokesperson F.C. van Wyk said police opened an inquest after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered Saturday morning at a property on Military Road in Schotschekloof.
Officials have not disclosed a cause of death.
