What Is Zombie Deer Disease?

The disease is medically known as chronic wasting disease (CWS) and it infects a deer by eating away at its brains making the animal display zombie-like behaviors. For example, the deer will start walking funny like a zombie and be aggressive to whatever’s in its path.

It will even show signs of dementia and break out with visible infections all over its body. Health officials are warning that eating the meat of one of these infected deers may infect the human with CWS. They are afraid it may be too late to stop it from spreading to humans.

Test Deer Meat Before Consuming

“We could be having human transmission occurring today, and we wouldn’t even know it,” Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, told The Independent.

Officials say if anyone has any reason to believe their deer meat may be infected with “zombie deer disease” they shouldn’t eat it. They urge all deer hunters to test the deer they kill for CWS before consuming it.
