Devastating news broke out of Midland, Texas, on Friday (June 12th) as a shooting resulted in the death of one victim.

According to USA Today, police responded to the scene of the shooting at the 4600 block of West Wall Street in Midland. Stewart Doreen, a spokesperson for the city, said police were involved in a “standoff” with the suspected shooter.

Before noon local time, city officials informed the public that the standoff had ended and the shooter was deceased.

A statement issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety named 45-year-old Odessa resident Victor Mata Villarreal as the suspect. The DPS statement says Villarreal “had been wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer after firing multiple shots at an MPD officer during a vehicle pursuit on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.”

At the time of this writing, there are 11 confirmed victims in the shooting. Sadly, one of those victims was killed, and 10 were wounded.

The DPS confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured.

“I would really ask Midlanders to pray for the families of those who have been impacted, for the victims themselves, for the family of the one who is confirmed deceased,” Mayor Blong said when providing an update on the situation.

USA Today reports that nine of the injured victims were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital.

Tasa Richardson, the Director of Planning, Marketing, and Communications, told USA Today that five of the victims had already been discharged at the time of their report’s publication. Another patient was in surgery at that time, while three others had already undergone surgery and were in recovery.
