73-Year-Old Woman Beats Attacker With American Flag Pole

South Salt Lake Police Department

A 73-year-old woman from South Salt Lake, fought off a stranger who attacked her and her two brothers Monday morning, August 31, 2020.

Lejune Timmerman said a deranged man jumped over a fence at her family’s home and began to beat the three of them. Timmerman told ABC news,

“He beat them up for no reason. He was beating on me, choked me.”

During the attack, Timmerman grabbed an American flag on a pole from the front porch of the house and began to fight back. South Salt Lake Police arrived minutes later and arrested him.

“I grabbed my glory and starting beating the hell back … I whooped his a– and I’ll whoop it again.”

The attacker, who was later identified as 42-year-old Justin Smith, was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, and criminal mischief.

Timmerman said that she felt bad for using the American Flag to beat up her attacker even though it was in self-defense. She was concerned because she broke her flag pole and the flag hit the ground.

“I told them, ‘hey, I didn’t mean to disrespect my flag, but he was hurting me and beating me.'”
