One exciting award given out is Single of the Year, which is a bit different than Song of the Year, even though two songs are nominated for both.

What is the difference between Song of the Year and Single of the Year?

Song of the Year is about the songwriting of each song. The award is given to the songwriters, publishers, and artists, while Single of the Year is awarded to the artist, producer, and record label.

Who was nominated for Single of the Year?

The nominees for Single of the Year are…

  • “Burn It Down” by Parker McCollum
  • “Fast Car” by Luke Combs
  • “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen
  • “Need a Favor” by Jelly Roll
  • “Next Thing You Know” by Jordan Davis

Ashley McBryde andactor Noah Reid presented the award, which has seen the likes of Cole Swindell, Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood, Carly Pearce and Lee Brice, Blake Shelton, Dan + Shay, and Sam Hunt take home in recent years.

They performed hilarious parodies of each song that was nominated for Single of the Year.

And this year’s ACM Award for Single of the Year went to…Luke Combs!

Combs released his cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” on his 2023 album Gettin’ Old after years of playing the song at live shows. In July 2023, “Fast Car” hit number one on the Country Airplay chart, making Chapman the first solo Black woman songwriter to reach the top of that chart. It also hit number one on the Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at number two on the all-genre Billboard 100.

In November 2023, Chapman became the first Black woman to win a CMA Award, where she took home Song of the Year (which goes to the songwriter). She also became the first Black songwriter to win the award. Combs took home both Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards.

In response to the success of Combs’ version of her song, Chapman said, “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there. I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.'”

Chapman and Combs joined forces at the 2024 Grammys to perform “Fast Car” as a duet for the first time.

Due to their duet, Chapman’s version of “Fast Car” saw a 38,000% increase in sales, making its return to the Hot 100 chart in 35 years!

Combs was not on hand to accept the award, but he still got a standing ovation!
