It’s the end of an era. Legendary rock band Aerosmith announced Friday (August 2) that they are retiring from touring, effective immediately.

Aerosmith made the announcement on social media with a lengthy statement thanking their fans for five decades of support and for making “our dreams come true.” The statement explains that they made the decision to retire from touring after realizing that a full recovery from lead singer Steven Tyler‘s vocal chord injury wasn’t possible.

“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury,” the band wrote. “We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”

In early September 2023, Aerosmith postponed six of their farewell tour dates after Tyler suffered a vocal chord injury during the third stop of their highly-anticipated tour.

“I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next thirty days,” Tyler shared in a statement at the time. “I sustained vocal cord damage during Saturday’s show that led to subsequent bleeding. We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.”

Two weeks later, the band indefinitely postponed the remainder of their tour stops when it was discovered that Tyler’s injury was more serious than first thought.

“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought. His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care,” the band shared.

About Aerosmith

Aerosmith is a Boston rock band that was formed in 1970 by Joe Perry (guitar), Steven Tyler (vocals), Ray Tabano (guitar), Joey Kramer (drums), and Tom Hamilton (bass). Unlike most new bands, Aerosmith found success quickly and earned the status as one of America’s best rock bands by the end of the 1970s.

Despite selling millions of albums and winning numerous awards, Aerosmith didn’t earn their first and only No. 1 hit until 1998 when they released “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.”

With over 150 million record sales worldwide, Aerosmith is the best-selling American hard rock band of all time. They are also credited with having the most total certifications by an American group, with 25 gold albums, 18 platinum albums, and 12 multi-platinum albums.

In 2001, Aerosmith were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Twelve years later, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry earned induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
