A huge part of Ashley McBryde’s story is her determination to prove her high school Algebra teacher wrong. McBryde recalled a life-changing comment her teacher made to her, saying:
“She was asking each person in the room what we were going to do when we grew up. She got to me and I said I was going to move to Nashville, and I’m going to write songs. And she said, ‘It’s not going to happen.'”
Instead of allowing that person’s words keep her down, Ashley put her pen to paper and wrote one of the most memorable and touching songs country music has seen in years. The poignant lyrics will tug at your heartstrings as you imagine a teenage girl full of hope being told that her dream isn’t worth pursuing.
Don’t waste your life behind that guitar
You may get gone, but you won’t get far
You’re not the first, you won’t be the last
And, you can tell us all about it when you come crawling back
During 2019’s Academy of Country Music Awards show, McBryde’s story came full circle when she stood on the stage as the reigning New Female Artist of the Year and sang the song she wrote about that pivotal conversation with her teacher. “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” served as the title track for McBryde’s debut album and has become her signature song.

Ashley stood alone on stage, accompanied only by her own guitar. The emotion could be heard in her voice as she sang the lyrics she’s sung dozens of times before. As her song concluded, the crowd rose to their feet, giving her the first standing ovation of the night. It was a moment we doubt she’ll ever forget.
