Ever since Merle Haggard passed away on April 6, his youngest son, Ben, has kept busy performing at various tribute concerts in his honor. The youngest of Merle’s six children, Ben was born with a love of country music that only grew over time. He joined his dad’s band, The Strangers, as a guitarist when he was only 15, and was serving as Merle’s lead guitarist before he passed away.

In addition to performing in his father’s band, Ben often records covers of Merle’s classic songs and shares them with fans online. These cover videos prove that not only is Ben a skilled guitarist, but a talented vocalist with a classic country sound.

Now, Ben is using his musical talents to honor his father’s incredible legacy.

On Thursday (May 19), Ben teamed up with The Strangers, his older brother and fellow country singer Noel Haggard, and country legends Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson for a concert in Florence, South Carolina. As to be expected, Ben paid tribute to his father during the concert by performing some of his most iconic songs.

Along with the others, Ben took the lead on his father’s song “Today I Started Loving You Again.” The song was released as the B-side to Merle’s “The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde,” and later went on to be recorded by notable artists such as Kenny Rogers and Emmylou Harris.

Ben shared a short video from the performance on Instagram, which shows Noel standing in the background strumming on his guitar and singing along. Words do not do this performance justice, so that’s why you have to check it out in the video below.

Thank you Ben and Noel for working to keep your father’s legacy alive. We know he’d be proud.

What a night..
