Scotty McCreery earned a standing ovation after performing a spot-on rendition of Garth Brooks‘ 1991 hit “The River.”

Taking place in 2011 during his stay on Season 10 of American Idol , the then 17-year-old country crooner gave a makeover to the 1992 megahit in front of an audience of cheering fans. During his masterful performance, McCreery showed off his sultry vocals that inevitably resulted in him being named the Season 10 champion.

Known for his devotion to keeping country music country, McCreery has a tendency of covering classic songs released far before he was even born. The young artist made history as the youngest male winner of the show after beating fellow country singer Lauren Alaina.

“The River” was co-written by Brooks and released as the fifth single off his album Ropin’ the Wind. The song garnered the country singer his ninth No.1, selling over 10 million copies in the United States alone.
