Bass-Playing Mask Collector Returns With One Groovy Cover Of ‘That Smell’

As a musician, it takes a lot of talent to stand out on YouTube these days. But one bass player named TJ seems to have figured out the secret.

TJ is one of the most-subscribed to bass players on YouTube, and it’s easy to see and hear why. He’s covered all sorts of rock classics, and excels at every one.

In the write-up to a previous cover, TJ admitted that he’s never been the biggest fan of Southern rock. But he still has a great appreciation for Lynyrd Skynyrd and the bass work featured in their songs.

You’ve probably seen TJ’s boogie-worthy cover of “I Know a Little,” a Street Survivors track penned by Steve Gaines. After the success of that cover, TJ decided to crank out another one focusing on another Skynyrd classic.

His song of choice was “That Smell,” a groovy but dark tune that was also included on Street Survivors. TJ happens to have a brother-in-law in the vintage guitar business, and he loaned him a bass to use for his cover. It’s an all-original 1996 Fender Jazz Bass in Olympic White, and comes with a matching headstock.

TJ puts that bass to good use in his cover of “That Smell.” In addition to being a bass player, TJ also enjoys collecting unusual masks. These masks appear in the background of his videos, including the one he filmed for “That Smell.” Considering the song’s haunting nature, the masks’ creepiness help to enhance that feeling.

It’s clear that TJ has studied Skynyrd’s work extensively. He cranks out that bass part with precision, playing in a way that surely would have impressed Skynyrd’s late bass player Leon Wilkeson.

Now it’s time for you to check out TJ’s cover in the video below! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the music.
