Blake Shelton Wishes He Could Have Kept Relationship With Gwen Private, He Says In 2016 Interview

NBC

These days, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani grace the covers of almost every magazine you see in stores. Ever since the two Voice coaches came forward and confirmed their relationship years ago, they have found themselves the focus of tabloids across the country.

Even long before the couple revealed they were dating, their relationship was already the source of gossip. Both Shelton and Stefani went through highly publicized divorces, which made their relationship all the more interesting to fans and tabloids alike.

Since it’s basically impossible to go anywhere or log on to any entertainment news site without hearing about Shelton and Stefani these days, some people have started to become frustrated with all the attention the couple receives. But as Shelton revealed in a 2016 interview with Us Weekly, he wishes it wasn’t that way.

During the interview, Shelton shared that he never expected his relationship with Stefani would become such a media sensation.

In fact, if Shelton would have had it how he wanted, no one would have known about their relationship in the first place.

If I could have kept my personal life private, I would have,” he said, adding, “Since I can’t, I might as well let people in on the truth.

Shelton said he and Stefani tried to hide their relationship at first, but he soon realized that was going to be a challenge.

What I found out — because it wasn’t someone from my hometown, it was Gwen Stefani that I was beginning to have this relationship with — there was no hiding it,” he said. “If I glance her way, it’s the cover of magazines.”

So rather than sneak around, Shelton decided that if his personal life was going to be public knowledge, he might as well do his best to make sure his fans knew the truth. Shelton has been big about sharing his personal story and relationship with fans recently, especially in his album If I’m Honest.

If I’m Honest includes a duet between Shelton and Stefani called “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” and the two often perform it together. You can watch one performance below.
