Gwen Stefani Admits She Almost Broke Up With Blake Shelton

The returning coach on The Voice opens up about why she and her fellow coach boyfriend were at the verge of breaking up and how they were able to grow their relationship from that point.

Stopping by the Late Night with Seth Meyers talk show, pop star and ‘Voice’ coach Gwen Stefani opened up to Meyers about the rocky start to her relationship with Blake Shelton and how the duet they wrote built their bond up even more.

“We had one of those ‘Oh maybe this is a terrible idea, what are we doing?’,” Stefani confessed. “It was really weird because we actually hadn’t been hanging out that long.”

It was during this time that Shelton penned the first beginnings of their duet, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” and had emailed the song to her.

It was like a weird…we weren’t even together but we were breaking up at the same time,” She continued describing the weird tipping point in the beginning of their relationship. “It was, like, scary!”

She then revealed that Shelton had “gone away” but managed to get the song over to her, adding that she was scared because she’d never really heard his voice before and didn’t know what to expect.

As their story goes, they penned the duet by continuing to send each other voice clips and writing verses one by one as a team about where they were at in the relationship.

Looking back on the experience fondly, Stefani says she’s amazed at how far it has come and what an incredible time they have performing it together at each other’s shows.
