Daughter of Ex-NBA Star Chooses Blake Shelton As Coach On ‘Voice’ Premiere

NBC/TheVoice

In a retooled performance of Nick Jonas’ “Jealous,” Voice contestant Dana Harper sparked an array of chair turns on the Season 11 premiere of NBC’s The Voice.

However more than just her striking vocals are catching the attention of the nation. The Dallas native is the daughter of former NBA point guard Derek Harper who spent 16 seasons with the organization on high profile teams such as the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Dallas Mavericks.

Harper earned a three-chair turn with a hold out from Miley Cyrus who explained “You sounded so great that I don’t know how I could’ve helped. And I think the most important part of this show is finding somebody that you’re gonna learn enough.”

With Cyrus out of the running, most seasoned watchers of the show would expect the soulful singer to choose either rockstar Adam Levine or jazz Queen Alicia Keys as her coach, but it turns out there is more to Harper than meets the eyes (or ears). In a surprising turn of events, Blake Shelton wins the coach-ship of Harper after an awe-inspiring speech given by the country crooner.

“I just want you to know how weird Hollywood can be,” begins Shelton. “What no girl I think has anywhere is that lower area that they can go and explore…And I think that’s something you can use to your advantage.”

Shelton’s two-cents on her unique vocals was enough to earn him the rare opportunity of having Harper on his team. You can watch Harper’s smooth performance of “Jealous” in the video below and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!
