Hank Jr.’s Thunderous Piano Solo In ‘Gonna Go Huntin’ Tonight’ Will Make Your Jaw Drop

Although Hank Williams Jr. doesn’t play the piano very often, when he does, you know you’re in for a real treat!

At a performance on the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Constellation in 1984, he sat behind the piano and told a little story, which he does so well.

“When I was growin’ up as a little boy on Franklin Road in Nashville, Tennessee,” he said. “[I] had a lot of people come over, give me a lot of help. I’ll never forget any of ’em.”

Almost immediately, Hank Jr. started pounding on the piano keys in a manner we’ve only seen from Jerry Lee Lewis! About halfway through, he played his piano so loud and fast, it’s almost as if he had four hands! At one point he even plays with his foot. It was truly a sight to see!

Hank Jr. loves playing off his fans and the crowd was rowdier than ever this particular night. At some points, we could barely hear Hank Jr. over the roar of the audience.

“Gonna Go Huntin’ Tonight” was the lead-off track and first single from Hank Jr’s 1983 album Strong Stuff. The album reached the No. 7 spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, while the single peaked at No. 4 on the Hot Country Singles chart.

Following the success of the single, Hank Jr. decided to include it on six compilation albums, including his 2016 box set, A Country Boy Can Survive
