While their award-winning duet may sound like an upbeat story of love, the lyrics possess a heartbreaking tale of love lost.
The video for “We Were Us” features Urban and Lambert performing in a dive bar, quickly drawing a sizable crowd as the song progresses. The friends kicked off their duet on separate microphones before coming together at the chorus for a set of flirty harmonies, illuminating the difficult truth that even while you may love someone, the relationship can still fall apart.
Eyes locked, they sing, “When a road was a road/ I could roll on through without wishin’ that empty seat was you.” “Money was gas, dreams were dust/ Love was fast and we were us.”
“We Were Us” tells the story of two former lovers reminiscing about their lost love, desperately wishing they could go back to the time in their lives. In addition to charting at number one, the song went on to win them a CMA Award for “Musical Event of the Year.”
During his Graffiti U tour, the Sheedy family was excited to hear Urban would be playing in their town once again at the Scotiabank Saddledome on September 23, 2018. They got ready for the night, decked out in denim and boots and one special item that would later catch Urban’s attention.
The Sheedy sisters brought two home-made signs with them to the show. One sister named Michela’s light-heartedly joked, “I will trade my sister for a chance to sing with Keith Urban.” Luckily, her sister seemed to be in on the joke with a sign that said, “Take me!”
The girls were just kidding around, but when Urban saw the silly signs, he called Michela out and brought her on stage.
