On that dreadful day in 1977 when The King died, the young daughter blurted out a horrific description of her father's lifeless body.
Now 66-years-old, Elvis Presley's former longtime girlfriend, Linda Thompson, opens up in a new book about the love that she had for 'The King' and the heartbreaking day that she got a call that would change her life forever.
In 1977, Thompson was living in Los Angeles continuing her acting and modeling career, when she got a startling phone call from then-9-year-old Lisa Marie Presley. Just eight months after she and Presley had ended their relationship, she stood in her apartment "frozen by a dread of acknowledging the truth", according to an excerpt of her book in People Magazine.
Hearing a young, breathless Lisa Marie on the other end shout her name would have been startling enough, but she went on revealing the fate her father had encountered, "My daddy's dead!"
Thompson denied the little girl's statement, to which Lisa Marie continued, "Yes he is! He's smothered in the carpet!"
The beloved American icon and musical catalyst had passed away in his Graceland estate from a heart attack, but it has long been speculated that his inclination toward prescription drugs played a role in his untimely death.
This heartbreaking story and many other happier ones are included in Thompson's book about "Loving Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner, and Songs in Between".
