Ten years after a plane crash had claimed some of their own, Lynyrd Skynyrd returned to the stage. The year was 1987, and the place was Charlie Daniels‘ Volunteer Jam concert.

It was Johnny Van Zant‘s first time leading the charge with Skynyrd on a public stage. Determined to honor his lost brother and Skynyrd’s other fallen bandmates, Johnny proved himself by putting on the performance of a lifetime.

Even though the show marked Skynyrd’s first reunion since the crash, it wasn’t an entirely somber occasion. Instead, the band chose to honor those they had lost by rockin’ out and having a blast on stage.

One of the songs they played that night was the ever-popular “Gimme Three Steps.” Knowing how important the moment was, everyone on stage that night poured endless amounts of passion into their performance.

The band’s hard work showed, and they ended up delivering a rollicking performance. We’re sure the crowd’s hearts were pounding the whole time, because that was one high-energy show!

Now it’s time for you to witness the one-of-a-kind performance by tuning in to the clip below.

We can’t stress enough how important this particular moment is in Skynyrd’s history. Through their ’87 Volunteer Jam performance, Skynyrd showed the world that they were back and ready to rock. And they haven’t left since.
