Out of all female artists in the history of country music, few have experienced a career as prolific and inspiring as Jessi Colter. The leading lady of outlaw country music made her debut in 1970 with the release of A Country Star is Born. Her star has continued to shine bright ever since.

In 1975, Colter scored the biggest hit of her career when she released the self-penned “I’m Not Lisa.” The song was a worldwide hit, and topped the country charts in both the U.S. and Canada.

Following the success of “I’m Not Lisa,” Colter was featured alongside her husband Waylon Jennings on the compilation album Wanted! The Outlaws. Also featuring Willie Nelson and Tompall Glaser, Wanted! was the first country record to ever be certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Colter has gone on to craft an extraordinary legacy through her talents as a singer, songwriter, and musician. It is a legacy she’s sure to enhance further with the release of her upcoming album, The Psalms.

Through all the twists and turns in her life, Colter’s faith has helped direct her. But as she admits in a trailer for her upcoming book, An Outlaw and a Lady, there was once a time when she turned away from her faith. But once she returned to it, the changes she witnessed were incredible:

“You know it’s such a beautiful mystery how the spirit works…once I came back to my faith, it was this incredible journey of unexpected words and impressions that would come to me as I sought more to know what God was thinking.”

Over the years, Colter has found comfort and joy in expressing herself through the Psalms in the Bible. After Jennings passed away in 2002, Colter felt inspired to turn her beloved Psalms into an album for her fans…and she did just that.

The Psalms, Colter’s first album released in over a decade, is a collection of some of Colter’s favorite Psalms, including “The Lord is My Shepherd” and “Who is the King of Glory.”

In a testament to Colter’s talent, the album’s co-producer and Colter’s good friend Lenny Kaye revealed that it took no time for them to record the album. “I don’t think we did more than two takes of any of them,” he said. “What we caught there in the studio was so precious.

A behind-the-scenes clip shows Colter and Kaye opening up further about everything that went into the making of the album. You can scroll down below to watch that video, which also features a portion of one of the songs Colter recorded.
