Tammy Wynette’s Emotionally-Charged ‘How Great Thou Art’ Will Give You Chills

Even on a stage filled with a dozen gospel singers, The Queen of Country Tammy Wynette’s powerful voice demands to be heard. The late American country singer was joined on stage by a variety of male singers on her TNN television series “The Legends of Country Music” for a moving performance of gospel song “How Great Thou Art.”

The “Stand by Your Man” singer started out the performance by graciously dedicating not just the song, but the entire show to her “hundreds of favorite gospel singers.” There was a massive amount of talent amongst the group of singers, but somehow the Queen’s voice still blows everyone else’s out of the water.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,” the group sings in a Gospel-like fashion. “How great Thou art, how great Thou art.”

“How Great Thou Art” was ranked second after “Amazing Grace” on a list of the best Christian hymns of all time in a survey conducted by Today’s Christian magazine in 2001. The song is a Christian based hymn rooted in Swedish origins with its lyrics derived from a poem written by Carl Gustav Boberg in Monsteras, Sweden dated back to 1885.
