Country Knockout Pairs Songs From Popular Groups
When Kelly Clarkson paired her team members Brynn Cartelli and Jamella together in the knockout rounds, she worked with each of them on a country song. Brynn took on Rascal Flatts‘ “Here Comes Goodbye” while Jamella had Little Big Town‘s “Girl Crush.”
Released in December 2014, “Girl Crush” swept the awards show seasons that followed it, taking home the CMA Awards for Song and Single of the Year in addition to two Grammys.
“Girl Crush” is also Little Big Town’s most successful crossover hit, as it reached the 18th spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
A History Of “Girl Crush” Covers
As one of the most popular country songs of the past decade, “Girl Crush” has long been a favorite for other artists to cover. Everyone from Miranda Lambert to Kelly Clarkson herself has offered up a cover of the song.
The song is so popular, that it’s often performed by contestants on other iterations of The Voice in other countries. Jamella finally brought the song to American viewers with her knockout round.
If you’ve heard “Girl Crush” before, you know that it has a sultry tone. That’s something that Jamella amplified in her performance on The Voice. While her voice certainly played a part in it, her confident stage presence was the real thing that helped up the song’s sultry vibe.
But Was It Enough To Save Her?
However, the performance fell flat with viewers, with many feeling that it was a bit shaky. But viewer opinion doesn’t matter during the knockouts, since they are pre-filmed. It’s left up to the coach to decide who stays and who goes.
So did Kelly decide to keep Jamella? Unfortunately, all of the confidence in the world just wasn’t enough to beat out Brynn’s performance, and Kelly decided to send Jamella home.
Go ahead and check out Jamella’s performance of “Girl Crush” below, then let us know if you think Kelly made the right choice.
