‘Voice’ Standout Delivers Questionable Garth Brooks Cover During Knockout Rounds

The stakes are high during this third round of competition on The Voice. The Knockout Rounds are the first time we hear the artists sing solo since their Blind Auditions – giving them free range to really show off their talent.

Besides being mentored by previous Voice winners, each competitor had to once again go up against a teammate to advance to the next round, this time with a new element being introduced – the save button. It’s kind of like the steal button, except that if a singer loses the Knockout Round, the coach that let the singer go can press their save button to keep them on their team as well. But if other coaches wanted to steal them, the singer gets to pick which team they will be heading to.

Team Kelly’s Kaleb Lee and Justin Kilgore were up against each other for their Knockout Round. If you remember, Lee first competed on Team Blake, but was stolen by Kelly Clarkson after Blake Shelton chose Pryor Baird during the Battle Rounds. Kilgore won over the hearts of America, and Clarkson, with his cover of Chris Young’s song “Tomorrow” during the Blind Audition and won his Battle Round against Molly Stevens singing Cam’s “Burning House.”

For his Knockout Round, Kilgore performed the Garth Brooks favorite “Shameless” to mixed reviews. Since he stunned during the Blind Auditions, Voice viewers had high hopes for the country singer.

Brooks released his version of Billy Joel’s 1989 hit in 1991 for his Ropin’ The Wind album, which included backup vocals from Trisha Yearwood. The two legends have performed the song together a couple times, including when Joel was inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

In the end, Kilgore’s performance wasn’t enough to keep him around in the competition, as Clarkson chose Lee to continue in the competition. Fans on YouTube didn’t disagree with Clarkson’s choice, saying Kilgore should have picked a better song suited for his voice. What do you think about his performance?
