What Kind Of Marriage Advice Did Dolly Parton Give Her Goddaughter, Miley Cyrus?

Dolly Parton knows a thing or two about marriage, after all, she’s been married to her husband, Carl Dean for 50 years. In a world in which we constantly hear about celebrity marriages ending in divorce, Dolly and Carl have made their love last. That’s why she seems like the perfect person to ask when it comes to marriage advice! 

Someone who may be seeking some of Dolly’s words of wisdom is her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus. Parton became close with Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus, when he was first getting started and opened for her on tour. That friendship led to Billy Ray asking her to be Miley’s godmother, and she accepted. 

Dolly appeared on Hannah Montana when Miley and Billy Ray were both stars on the show, and godmother and goddaughter also collaborated on a stunning version of “Jolene.” In an interview with Digital Spy, Dolly had nothing but praise for Miley and her many talents, especially her singing.

“I think her voice is as great if not greater than most of the girls in the business,” she said.

During the interview, Dolly also gave Miley her best marriage advice, since she is rumored to be engaged again to her on and off flame, actor Liam Hemsworth. While Dolly didn’t confirm that Miley and Liam are engaged, she provided some words of wisdom concerning marriage, saying respect is key.

“Keep a great respect for each other…I just say to be respectful and mindful of the other person’s feelings and try to compromise when you need to,” she said. “Don’t ever start arguing because that can become a habit and a pattern. Better to just walk away than to start throwing things back and forth and all that.“

As for what she thinks of Liam, Dolly says she’s only met him once, but believes he and Miley make a good pair.

“I met him briefly when she was with him the first time, before they broke up for a while,” she said. “He seemed like a good guy. But if she has chosen him, he must be special.“

As Miley’s godmother, Dolly would know better than most people if Liam is the right person for her. Dolly also knows that Miley makes a great duet partner, as she proved to a small crowd gathered at Dollywood. You can watch them sing “Jolene” together in the video below.
