Blackstock worked as a talent manager for many years, following in the footsteps of his father, Narvel Blackstock. Narvel married country music star Reba McEntire in 1989 and managed her career. Brandon was 12 years old when his dad and Reba married.

Kelly filed for divorce in 2020, but it wasn’t finalized until 2022.

On August 6th, Kelly postponed her August Vegas residency performances to support her and Brandon’s children, sharing that he was “ill.” The following day (August 7th), Brandon’s family announced he had died after privately battling cancer for three years. He was 48 years old.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away,” the family’s statement read. “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

Silver Bow County Coroner Releases Brandon Blackstock’s Cause Of Death

On Monday (August 11th), four days after Brandon Blackstock passed away, his official cause of death was revealed. The Silver Bow County Coroner, Dan Hollis, told PEOPLE Brandon’s cause of death was melanoma, and his manner of death was natural.

Hollis said, “Brandon Blackstock passed away peacefully at his home in Butte, Montana on August 7th under hospice care surrounded by his family.”

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, melanoma usually starts on a portion of the skin that’s regularly exposed to the sun. In some cases, melanoma can form in the eyes, and in rare instances, inside the nose or throat.

The exact cause of all melanomas remains unknown. However, most are known to be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light, otherwise known as UV light.

An unnamed source previously spoke to PEOPLE after Brandon’s death, saying that Kelly had been “devastated” for their kids since he received his diagnosis.

“When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake. Kelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well. She’s been devastated for the kids.

Our hearts and prayers go out to all who loved Brandon Blackstock.
