BREAKING: Brown University Gunman Found Dead
on Dec 18, 2025

Nearly one week after the mass shooting at Brown University, the suspect has been found dead.
A massive manhunt has been underway since Saturday’s shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, that left two dead and nine injured. That manhunt came to an end Thursday night when authorities found the suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a storage unit.
According to authorities who broke the news during a press conference, an unnamed source provided them with the information needed to identify and track down the suspect.
“That person led us to the car, which led us to the name, which led us to the photographs of that individual renting the car, which matched the clothing of our shooter here in Providence that matched the satchel that we see here in Providence,” Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said.
The tip led officers to Salem, New Hampshire, roughly 90 miles north of where the mass shooting took place.
Brown University Suspect Identified
Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez, Jr., told the press that the suspect had been identified as 48-year-old Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a former Brown University student and Portuguese national.
Law enforcement said that they believe Perez acted alone and that there is no longer an active threat. They are also looking into possible ties between the Brown University shooting and the killing of an MIT professor in Massachusetts, an unnamed officer close to the case told CNN.

Victims in Brown University shooting Identified
The two victims who lost their lives in Saturday’s shooting were identified as Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov. Both were students at Brown.
News of Cook’s death was confirmed by Reverend Craig Smalley, who pastors the church Cook attended in Birmingham, Alabama.
“Tragically, one of our parishioners, Ella Cook, was one of those who was killed yesterday,” Smalley said. “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light. Not only growing up here in the ways… she encouraged and lifted up those around her, but at Brown University. She was an incredible light [there] as well.”
United States Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Jonathan Henick, confirmed Umurzokov’s death in a message posted official website of the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent.
“I am deeply saddened by reports of the tragic death of Brown University student Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov on December 13. We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Umurzokov’s family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future,” he said.
A GoFundMe account created for Mukhammad’s family further confirmed the news, saying:
“On December 13, MukhammadAziz Umurzokov was tragically taken from us in the Brown University shooting. He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his family wrote. “Our family is incredibly devastated by this loss. Any donations will help significantly with any expenses my family will have to face, and the rest of the funds will be donated to charity in his name.”
This is a developing story.
