The person of interest in the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been arrested, according to the FBI.
Authorities held a press conference on Friday morning to announce the suspect’s arrest and identify him as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Online sources report that Robinson was a senior at Utah State University, where he was attending on scholarship.
Authorities said that a family member recognized Robinson from photos that had been released and reached out to a family friend. That friend contacted the sheriff’s department and FBI who investigated further before making an arrest.
Family members told investigators that Tyler had become more political in recent years. They recalled specific comments Robinson had made about Charlie Kirk “spreading hate” and mentioned that Kirk would be speaking in Utah.
In an interview with Robinson’s roommate, authorities were able to see messages from Tyler that referenced retrieving a rifle from a drop point and hiding it “wrapped in a towel” following the incident. The messages also referenced messages that were engraved on four bullets, one of which was used in the shooting, and three unfired bullets.
Tyler Robinson was arrested and booked into the Washington County Jail, roughly four hours south of where the shooting took place.

Kirk was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Footage from the scene of the shooting shows the chaos that followed as attendees rushed for cover, many in shock at what they had just witnessed.
A manhunt was immediately underway for the individual responsible for Kirk’s death. Two men were apprehended on suspicion, but were later released after being questioned.
On Thursday morning, the FBI announced that they had made progress in the investigation. Cameras on the UVU campus and surrounding neighborhoods captured the suspect arriving at the event and fleeing the area afterward.
“We were able to track the movements of the shooter. Starting at 11:52 a.m., the subject arrived on campus, shortly away from campus. We have tracked his movements onto the campus, through the stairwells, up to the roof, across the roof to a shooting location,” Robert Bohls, FBI special agent in charge told reporters in a press conference.
The agency released two sets of photos of the person of interest and asked for any information that would identify the subject and lead to his arrest.

Donald Trump appeared on Fox & Friends Friday, September 12, and revealed that the suspect had been caught.
President Donald Trump appeared on Fox & Friends on Friday morning (September 12) prior to the press conference and said that “essentially somebody that was very close to [the suspect] turned him in. That happens when you have some of those good shots.”
According to an update from CNN, that person was the suspect’s father.
“I’m always subject to correction, but I’m just giving you based on what I’m hearing,” he said.
The man in custody allegedly confessed to his father, who secured his son and called the authorities so he could be detained. CNN reports that the father was cooperating with investigators.
Former FBI assistant director for the Criminal Investigative Division Chris Swecker said on CNN News Central:
“They’re going to get a shot at interrogating him. He’s got to be properly Mirandized. They’ll bring in someone who has some expertise in this area, demonstrated experience, and they’ll see what they can get out of him. But in the meantime, they’re going to go through the process of matching the forensic evidence up with him. Now you’re building towards a prosecution and a trial.”
