Talented Singers Bring The ‘Burn’ To Voice Battles

Sometimes during the battle rounds on The Voice, the coaches will pair up contestants with entirely different styles.

Other times, they’ll match two singers who have extremely similar styles to see who will come out on top.

The latter is exactly what Kelly Clarkson did when she paired Justin Kilgore and Molly Stevens for a battle over one of the hottest country hits of the past few years. That hit was Cam‘s “Burning House.”

Released in 2015 as Cam’s second-ever single, “Burning House” scorched the country charts and eventually claimed some of their highest rankings. It was also a crossover success, and climbed as high as the 29th spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Switching Things Up & Making It Raw

Cam’s recording of “Burning House” is distinctly tender, yet powerful. But Kilgore and Stevens’ cover of the song took on a different vibe. They both have raw, gritty voices, which offered an almost rock-like sound to their performance of the song.

That grit resulted in a performance that perfectly illustrated the pain buried in the song’s lyrics. Their battle performance was vulnerable and passionate. As a result, it brought tears to the eyes of the coaches, not just Clarkson.

As you’ll understand once you watch their battle performance below, Clarkson was left with a challenging choice to make. In the end, she opted to keep Kilgore on her team.

Go ahead and listen to the audio of the “Burning House” battle in the clip below. Do you think Clarkson picked the right person as the winner?
