Carrie Underwood Debuts New Theme Song For Sunday Night Football
Carrie Underwood has officially returned as the voice of the Sunday Night Football opening theme!
Back in August, NBC confirmed that Carrie would return for her 14th season as the singer of the Sunday Night Football opener. The country star has been lending her voice to the iconic theme since 2013, taking over the role from Faith Hill, who performed it from 2007 to 2012.
Although Carrie has switched things up with new songs over the years, she has primarily performed the traditional SNF theme, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” throughout her time with the NFL.
Carrie has reimagined “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” for this season’s theme. NBC previously shared that the new opener would be leaning into a rock-and-roll vibe, giving the longtime tradition a fresh twist.
“This season, we’ve drawn inspiration from Carrie’s deep, well-documented love of rock music – a perfect fit since our Sunday Night Football anthem was born from pure rock ‘n’ roll: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ ‘I Hate Myself for Loving You.’” Tripp Dixon, creative director for SNF‘s opening theme throughout Carrie’s time with the show, said in a statement.
On Sunday (September 13), Carrie debuted the new song ahead of Sunday’s big game.
For the opening video, the “Before He Cheats” singer takes viewers through three distinct settings, performing in an intimate club, a packed stadium and a recording studio.
“This year’s show open welcomes Sunday Night Football into my ongoing rock star fever dream,” Carrie previously said in a statement. “I love this new version of the track and, once again, Tripp and the incredible team behind the camera brought it to life in a whole new way that captures the spirit of this iconic song and the heart of rock & roll. It’s one of my most favorite opens yet.”
NFL fans quickly took to social media to share their reactions, with Carrie’s performance receiving mixed reviews.
“Just saw it. It’s awesome! We’re going to have a great FB season,” one fan commented.
“Carrie Underwood was fantastic for Sunday Night Football, but the theme song remix for the stadium overview isn’t that good!,” another wrote.
