Cody Johnson is one of the biggest stars in country music at the moment. Last year, he was honored as one of CMT’s “Artists of the Year” and received two CMA Awards.
Johnson continues to crush it in 2023. He recently won the Performance of the Year award at the CMT Music Awards.
Additonally, Johnson performed twice during the ceremony. He received tons of praise for participating in the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute at the end of the show.
While he’s riding this wave, Johnson is giving the fans exactly what they want…a new album!
Johnson’s previous release was Human: The Double Album. The record came out in October 2021 and reached the third spot on the Top Country Albums chart.
Human included Johnson’s emotional hit single, “‘Til You Can’t.”
Now, Johnson is ready to release the followup to Human.
Johnson broke the news about his new album during an interview with KMLE Country 107.9 at Arizona’s Country Thunder festival. He shared TONS of details about the new record, including its length and title.
For starters, Johnson’s new album is titled Leather. Like Human, Leather will be a double album. It will feature 24 tracks.
“This round of 24 songs I have to say is the best round of songs I have ever recorded and I feel like that’s the way it should be,” Johnson said. “Each album should outdo the last one.”
Johnson also shared the theme of the new album is “fun.”

As for a release date, Johnson didn’t give any specifics. But he did say fans can expect the album “maybe by the end of the year, maybe next year.”
Fans previously got the hint Johnson was working on a new album when he told CMT’s Cody Alan he just recorded a duet with Carrie Underwood.
“I actually just recorded a duet with her yesterday for my new album coming out,” Johnson told Alan at the time.
He shared what it was like to work with the “Hate My Heart” singer:
“So, getting to know her, man she’s such a pro and everybody that she surrounds herself with are all very professional as well. And I don’t mean this to sound bad, but it’s kind of hard to compete with that.”
We sure hope we’ll see Johnson and Underwood’s duet on Leather! We can’t wait to hear it and the other tracks.
In the meantime, listen to Johnson sing “Human,” the title track from his last record, in the video below.
