“This round of songs, I have to say, is the best round of songs I have ever recorded, and I feel like that’s the way it should be. Each album should outdo the last one.”
Johnson has talked about how he was first drawn to the album’s title track, which was written by Ian Munsick, Rivers Rutherford, and Jeremy Spillman.
“The day that Ian Munsick played me ‘Leather,’ we were just sitting on the bus getting to know each other, picking guitars and stuff, and he plays me the song and I’m like, ‘Dude, I will cut that in a heartbeat,’ Johnson told Apple Music. “And he’s like, ‘That would be such a cool album title. Cody Johnson: Leather.’ And he’s like, ‘I didn’t even know you were cutting an album.’ I was like, ‘I’m not. I don’t think. Maybe I am. But if you’ll give me the song, I’ll cut a record around it.’ And it just happened.”
The first single released off the new album was “The Painter,” which Johnson will perform for the first time for television audiences on the upcoming CMA Awards, which will be broadcast live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena 8:00-11:00 PM/EST on ABC. He will go into the show as a Male Vocalist of The Year nominee.
