Two days after a plane rolled upside down during a crash landing in Toronto, Delta Airlines announced that they are offering a five-figure settlement to each passenger.

A Delta flight traveling from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, caught fire and rolled upside down after a hard landing. 76 passengers and 4 crew members were aboard the flight. 21 people were treated for injuries, all of which were not life-threatening. As of press time, all but one of the injured individuals had been released from the hospital.

Footage shared by a pilot in another aircraft on the ground showed the moment of impact that sparked an immediate fire. The plane banked right after touching down, shearing off a wing and rolling the aircraft upside down.

STRONG LANGUAGE WARNING

Several passengers have spoken to the media since the incident and detailed the frightening moment.

Passenger John Nelson, who was one of the first to share the video after the landing, told CNN that their approach seemed routine but that the runways were in “kind of a weird condition.”

“When we hit it was just super hard … we hit the ground and the plane went sideways. I believe we skidded on our side then flipped onto our back where we ended up. There was a big fireball out the left side of the plane.”

Pete Carlson, who was also aboard the flight, recalled the “forceful event” to CBC News.

“We’re coming into land, and there have been comments early in the flight about strong winds, and as we made our descent and made a touchdown, it was just a very forceful event where all of a sudden everything just kind of went sideways, and then next thing I know is kind of a blink and I’m upside down, still strapped in.”

When asked what the mood was like on the plane after it came to a stop, Carlson said that things were calmer than you might expect.

“Everyone on that plane suddenly became very close in terms of how to help one another and console one another, and that was powerful, but yeah, there was definite – ‘What now? Who’s leading? How do we find ourselves away from this?’”

Miraculously, no lives were lost and no serious injuries were suffered.

Delta issued a statement Wednesday morning saying that the company is working “to provide support to customers, employees and loved ones of those involved in Delta Connection Flight 4819.”

They added that the Delta Care Team is helping passengers with hotels, meals, transportation, and personal needs. They are also working to remove belongings and luggage from the damaged aircraft and will return them to passengers as soon as possible.

“Securing, identifying, sorting, and cleaning all belongings left onboard could take a matter of weeks before all items can be safely returned,” Delta said.

In a statement issued to AFP Wednesday afternoon, the airline said that each passenger will be offered $30,000 and “has no strings attached.”

News of the settlement offer was met with mixed reactions. Some praised the airline for its quick action to make things right with passengers who were no doubt traumatized by the crash. Others felt the amount was “insulting.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
