Popular Dog Food Recalled Due To Potential Presence Of Sharp Metal & Plastic

A common brand of canned dog food has issued a recall, saying one of its products may pose a danger to pets.
On July 2, Mars Petcare, which owns the popular pet food brand Pedigree, issued a voluntary recall. This recall concerns the 13.2 oz cans of Pedigree High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor wet dog food.
The recall has only been issued for two lot codes so far: 613C3KKCFC & 613C1KKCFC.
“The recalled products did not meet Mars and PEDIGREE stringent safety and quality standards,” Mars Petcare shared in a statement, which is posted on the FDA’s website.
The statement continued, reading, “As part of the robust quality control process every single PEDIGREE product undergoes, these two lots had been sent to a third-party vendor for destruction. Mars later discovered that the product appears to have been fraudulently diverted and sold into the marketplace in the United States.”

What is the reason for the recall? As Mars Petcare explained, the product is being yanked off the shelves because it “may contain metal and plastic foreign material.”
The company’s statement emphasized how “the potential presence of sharp metal and plastic foreign material in the cans could pose a hazard” to dogs if ingested.
What Should You Do If Your Pet Ate The Recalled Dog Food?
Mars Petcare detailed how dogs that consume sharp objects, such as metal or plastic fragments, could face a variety of health issues. These issues include choking, internal lacerations, or gastrointestinal blockages.
As of press time, zero injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled food. However, Mars Petcare urged pet owners to contact their vet if they have any concerns about their dog’s health after feeding them the recently recalled food.
If you purchased the recalled dog food, or believe you did, and you have not fed it to your pet, do not do so. Instead, call Pedigree at 1-800-525-5273 to receive a replacement product.
Mars Petcare said it is working with authorities to determine how the now-recalled food ended up in circulation. They stated, “We are committed to protecting pets and helping consumers identify and remove the affected products from use.”
