Grand Ole Opry Plots TV Special To Celebrate Its 100th Anniversary
The Grand Ole Opry is just days away from celebrating its 100th anniversary during a live TV special, fittingly named Opry 100.
As the Opry website details, November 28, 1925, is widely viewed as the day the Grand Ole Opry was born. That’s the date George D. Hay launched the WSM Barn Dance, featuring 77-year-old fiddle player Jimmy Thompson.
During a broadcast two years later (in 1927), Hay said, “For the past hour we have been listening to the music taken largely from the Grand Opera, but from now on we will present the Grand Ole Opry.” The name caught on, and the WSM Barn Dance became the Grand Ole Opry.
In the decades since then, the Opry has been the setting for some historic moments, even after its physical location moved. In 1974, it relocated from the Ryman Auditorium (known as “The Mother Church of Country Music”) to the Grand Ole Opry House, which it still calls “home” today.
For many country artists, there is no greater honor than being asked to become an Opry member. It’s something many singers dream of until that life-changing moment finally happens.
In the past 100 years, the Opry has welcomed a long list of superstar members, including Patsy Cline, Randy Travis, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, and Lainey Wilson.
With 2025 being a milestone year, the Opry 100 TV special is just the beginning of what the Opry has planned to celebrate. Learn more about the program below, including details about how to watch and who’s performing.
