FDA Issues High-Risk Recall For Two Popular Potato Chip Brands

If you have chips in your pantry, you may want to check the bag.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled hundreds of thousands of bags of two popular chip brands, and the recall has now been placed under the agency’s highest risk level.
The chips included in the warning are certain bags of Zapp’s New Orleans Style Kettle Chips and Dirty brand potato chips. The FDA has classified it as a Class I recall due to the potential risk of Salmonella contamination.
According to the FDA’s official website, this means it is “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Although the recall was only recently upgraded to the FDA’s highest risk level, the affected chips were originally recalled in May.
Utz Quality Foods said the recall was issued after learning that the seasoning used on the chips contained a dry milk powder ingredient that could have traces of Salmonella.
At the time, the company said it issued the warning “out of an abundance of caution” because the seasoning batches had tested negative before they were used.
What Flavor Of Chips Are Being Recalled?
Not every chip sold under these brands is affected. The FDA has identified only certain products that fall under the Class I recall. See below for the specific chip flavors to avoid.

- 2.5oz, 8oz, Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips, Plastic Bag. (179,837 bags)
- 1.5oz, 2oz Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, Plastic Bag. (300,395 bags)
- 2.0 oz Dirty Maui Onion Chip, Plastic Bag. (5,000 bags)
- 1.5oz, 8.0oz, Zapp’s Big Cheezy Potato Chips, Plastic Bag. (14,976 bags)
- 2.0 oz Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips, Plastic Bag. (19,200 bags)
There have been no reported illnesses or deaths linked to these chips. Even so, if you have any of the recalled products at home, you’re strongly encouraged to throw them away.
Salmonella can cause serious illness and, in rare cases, can even be fatal. The Mayo Clinic states that people infected with the bacteria may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps anywhere from 8 to 72 hours after exposure.
